Survey on Generic Medicines and Its Acceptability by Doctors, Pharmacists, and Patients

To date, generic drugs account for just over 13% of Class A drug costs, but in the next five years, the estimated savings could be up to over 1.1 billion euro. And at the time, the confidence of patients seems to be improving, and an even stronger role we have doctors and pharmacists.
Here are some of the aspects that emerged from the study "The generic drug system - Scenarios for sustainable growth" which throw insights on how the generics system in India and what would be the basic elements for a development of the sector for the growth of the country "and" explored through three distinct direct surveys, the experiences of doctors, pharmacists and patients compared to generic medicines, investigating in particular the reasons for the behavior.

One of the survey results is the impact in terms of "containment of expenditure of the NHS" "so far despite the generic account for only 30% of the total sales of expired patent drugs', but interesting is also the perception of doctors, pharmacists, and patients.

A first fact that emerges regards the system: the question "How important have the following factors in obstructing the spread of generic medicines? (1 = not important; 5 = extremely important)" by general practitioners in the first place is indicated, with a value of 4, the '' excessive number of manufacturers for the same active ingredient '; followed by "insufficient information on the reliability of the manufacturers of generic medicines and their drugs" (3.5) and "patient distrust" (3.4).
The same question pharmacists have put first the 'distrust of the prescribing physician "and" by the patient ", both with a value of 4.1, while the' 'excessive number of manufacturers for the same active ingredient 'gets a value of 3.3. More important is the "public dissemination of approximate inaccurate information" (3.6) on a par with "insufficient information on the reliability of the manufacturers."

But according to most of these professionals, they are changing attitude towards patient’s greater confidence, a figure which was found 70% of pharmacists and 53% of doctors. In general, the question "when the prescription does not mention the word that cannot be replaced, how often the patient accepts the generic medication that you are proposing?" pharmacists detect a high figure: the sum of the answers almost always + nearly half of the time is equal to 76.4% for the Class A and to 64.0% for class C.

On the front of the citizens, the survey It highlighted that "in describing their relationship with generics, patients claim to know what they are (95% of consumers say they know the generic medicines) and to use them (71% use them). In addition, "between 29% of those who said they do not use generics, 47% say they do not trust these medications while 15% test them once and found ineffective."

But also on the front patients, it emerges a changing landscape, which varies by age group. To the question "Why did you chose to use the generic medicine?" to have indicated the doctor as first source of information is the age group over 61 years (38%), while the reference point is the pharmacist to 43% of the band of sample between 41 and 60 years and 39 % between 18 and 40, where it is more high-end choice for autonomy, which comes to 27% of the indications, against 19% of those over 61, while the family council seems to have a low weight in all age groups.

It seems clear from the study that if the generic medicines accounted for the Indian health lifeline, it did so while not fully expressing its potential. This should take into account the political decision-maker looking for more savings, rather than speculate short incidence draconian solutions on budgets but very risky for the pharmaceuticals business. " "We are pleased with the results of the study because it confirms that what we have argued in recent years the need to revise the pay-back mechanisms, to eliminate patent linkage as required by Asia and to promote the use of equivalent and biosimilars."
